Returning to the fold after a period of reflection, Oak Ay delivers the expansive, expertly crafted, and distinctly emotive SMALLHAUL. Landing on the long-standing Norwegian label Beatservice Records, the Trondheim-based electronic artist draws on a multitude of inspirations with this varied EP that combines bass-heavy dance music, glitchy IDM, and sweeping ambient. Oak Ay originally began life as the alias of two self-proclaimed synth nerds from Trondheim, Simen Helbæk Kjølberg and Isak Hannisdal. Their biggest track, a remix of Kalandra's track 'The Waiting Game', has amassed close to 200,000 Spotify streams and showcases the depth of their sound. Returning in 2025 with just Simen at the helm, SMALLHAUL is a statement to the development and ever-evolving sonic world of Oak Ay.The EP begins with 'Teti'. Sounding like a fusion of Four Tet and Mount Kimbie, it lulls you into a false sense of security with its stripped-back beat and glitchy vocal sampling, before erupting into a bass bin-rattling, bassline-heavy club track. 'No&No' and 'Liar' follow. The former a short but sweet synth-wielding amalgamation of IDM and beatmaker flows. The latter a hypnotic, arp-infused spiral that is both ethereal and energising in the same breath. Closing out the EP, 'Cocoon' shows the breadth of Oak Ay's new stage of being. A pulsating, looped-up slice of electronic ambient, it's pensive and emotional possessing an instant ability to calm the restless chatter of the modern-day mind. |
